Crossed the border and never looked back All my belongings tucked up in my pack Afraid of loving what I can’t let go Anna Lena, I left her behind But she will always be on my mind Through my veins the gypsy blood flows I follow in the footsteps of the hopeless ghosts Chorus There’s no town that feels like home There’s no town that feels like home This wilderness I wander alone My destination unknown A vagabond for beauty I may be I wander in the footsteps of the hopeless ghosts Chorus Home is the road I’m on Home is the road I follow in the footsteps of the hopeless ghosts Chorus

Mother Road 04:15
Born in this small town I watched them chase their dreams Heading west to California From Chicago and Oklahoma in search of better things They hoped to find it all here Back when the dream was still alive I joined a band and we travelled the Mother Road Played every joint from here to Illinois My father was a barber, owned this old shop I helped him out when it got busy You could do alright for tips Out here on 66 Chorus I grew up out here on the Mother Road I’ve seen them come and I seen them go I’ve never known any other road Like the Mother Road By the end of the 60’s the old town had changed The interstate had carried folks away Everything got faster leaving me behind My father died and left this place to me Don’t know why I chose to stay People moved away and all the businesses closed down You see we’re off the beaten track The streets were empty just another ghost town No longer on the map A town nobody knows A place nobody goes Chorus These days you’ll still find me in the barber shop Stop by and say hello I like it out here on the Mother Road It’s all I really know I guess I won’t ever go until I have to go

Love will come again Without any warning Things won’t be the same But life must go on As sure as every spring The daffodils will open The clouds will bring the rain The sun will bring the warmth The birds will go on singing Hear the beauty in their song I’ll still be by your side Even when I’m gone In the raven on the wire In the solitary hummingbird In the faces in the fire In the footprints in the snow The sunrise in the desert In the winter storm I’ll still be by your side Even when I’m gone
4.
The End 04:03
So now I lie here in the dust My whole life I’ve been cursed My old horse has finally given out There’s nobody else about The secrets I could tell Before I go straight to hell The violence that I’ve known The darkness I’ve been shown For just a glimpse of Mary’s face A final moment in her grace The mercy of her kiss I guess it was always going to end like this It was always going end like this I guess I’ve really had it this time One too many dirty jobs But there’s just so many fools to rob Just too much out there to steal And cards to deal But now the posse is in sight They’ll be here before it’s night I know where I am going I can see the tree they’re gonna hang me from Trapped under my dear old horse He ran till his poor heart burst If I could only reach my gun I’d end it all before those bastards come I guess I’ve really had it this time For just a glimpse of Mary’s face A final moment in her embrace The mercy of her kiss I guess it was always going to end like this Guess it was always going end like this

Review of Ghosts, by Folk Radio UK:
