A Song For The Dark Times

by Dean Owens

/

about

A Song For The Dark Times was inspired by the title of Ian Rankin's new Rebus book, which is out on 1 Oct. Ian and Dean got chatting when Ian was appearing at Cash Back in Fife festival (organised by Dean, a million years ago in March 2020!).

The song was written by Dean in lockdown, with the tune coming from the song of a blackbird in his garden, which got stuck in his head.
Warning: You may find Dean's version has the same effect!!

He then sent a rough sketch to John Convertino in El Paso who loved it and came up with a drum part. It then went to Dean's Southerners buddy, Tom Collison in London, who added keys, and everything else.

There's also a beautiful, slightly psychedelic video on Dean's YouTube site - highly recommend checking it out too - youtu.be/aWUmPyAEqmQ

lyrics

A Song For The Dark Times

Blackbird has sung his sweet gentle song
Making the world feel alright
He’s singing to me his sweet melody
Clear and bright

It’s a beautiful day
The clouds have all stayed away
There’s hardly a breeze in the air
It’s hard to stay in
I miss everything that’s out there

Chorus
I can’t wait till it’s over
I can’t wait till it’s done
I can’t wait to be out in the sun

Blackbird come save my weary soul
Sing me out of the dark
I miss this old town, just wandering round
In the park

So blackbird my friend
Sing me till the end, be my lifeline
Been here for so long
We all need a song for the dark times

Chorus

The kids are all home
They play on their own
Their friends they all do the same
No summer vacation
Just isolation

Chorus
